Identical Vision - The Story of “Let Your Music Shine”
Written by Lisa Grace Allison and Linda Sebenius
From our first moments singing together in the womb, Linda and I have shared a passion and a joyful vision of what our lives were meant to be. Although our paths have been different in some ways, we both have felt called to the same life’s work: encouraging all young children to “Let Your Music Shine”.
For the first 18 years of our lives, we shared many of the same family musical experiences. We both remember the day we discovered our mutual joy of performing. While only 4 years old, our biggest fan, Grandma Hofman, offered us $1 to dance and sing. We went on to even greater neighborhood fame: As young children, Lisa and I put on many original “shows” in our family room bay window, complete with makeup and costume, charging a nickel for all who would attend. What a thrill! We never guessed that this pastime would become our life’s work!
We grew up in a vibrant, dynamic, busy household of eight. We all sang at home, in the car, and in our Church choirs. With a budget stretched to the limit, our parents believed in our talent and gave Linda and I many gifts…10 years of piano lessons, tap lessons, jazz dance lessons, flute lessons, sewing lessons and many, MANY opportunities to SHINE. What a blessing!
After High School, our paths diverge: Linda went on to get her Music Composing degree, moved to Seattle, got a job at IBM, and met her husband Frank. Right out of High School, Lisa fell in love, married, and started a family. For 12 years, we went about our lives and raised our sons (Linda has 3 sons, Lisa has 4 sons). During this time, we did very little music together. This was our time for personal growth in our music. Linda taught Suzuki piano and flute, and began her 15 years of teaching early childhood programs, including Kindermusik and Musikgarten. Next steps for Lisa were attending University of Washington and getting a BA and MA in music education/teaching certificate with five years of private voice training.
It was time to do more music together. In 1992, we began voice lessons with “THE MAESTRO”, a legendary Seattle voice coach and from here we put together an ACT: Identical Harmony. During this time, we also started singing together for church. We honed our skills – singing along with karaoke tracks - quite funny when looking back! And we started our three seasons in Jubilee, a “Dicken’s Carolers” performance quartet. Eighty hours of performing during the holidays really fine-tuned our performance skills.
When our Mom went through her eight month ordeal with cancer in 1994, Linda’s creativity spiked and a floodgate of composing opened up. From these songs our first CD “ECHO” was released. With the release of the CD, we began touring Hawaii, Ohio, Indiana and Washington State, doing Hospice benefits to honor Mom. But hey! How much can we do? We have seven young sons between us! We know this is not the time to tour a great deal and be away from our families. There will be a time for us to do more of our music.
Step by step we move closer to our vision for “Let Your Music Shine”. We are hired by Redmond parks and Recreation to do a Children’s Show. Linda excels at film-scoring and wins awards for her compositions. Lisa completes her Masters Degree with a research project titled “Beyond Barney: Music Education via Television for the Young Child in the 21st Century.” Our sons continue their beautiful growth to adulthood and in 1999 we begin our amazing artist relationship with the Seattle Symphony. Lisa meets the Education Director of the Symphony in her graduate program, and Linda meets the Executive Director of the Symphony (and her daughter!) in her Kindermusik classes. Both feel these two girls could add much to the Symphonies 2nd year of Tiny Tots shows. More then 200 shows and 8 years later, we are very grateful for their belief in our work.
Today we are also grateful to be composing, performing, and producing The Very Best Music for the Very Young ™ with our brother Michael and our friend Peter, who joined us in 2007 to form a new media production company, Music Shine Media. We are thankful for so many people who have been a part of our journey and, most of all, our grateful hearts go out to all our fans and our family for being with us all along the way….the Shining is just beginning. |
